Tanzanian parliament approves Mwigulu Nchemba as new prime minister
Mwigulu Nchemba succeeds Kassim Majaliwa, who had held the position for a decade.
Tanzania's parliament on Thursday unanimously approved the appointment of Mwigulu Nchemba as the country's new prime minister, following his nomination by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
Speaker of Parliament Mussa Azzan Zungu announced the result in the House chamber in Dodoma, the capital, drawing applause from lawmakers in attendance. Of the 371 members present, 369 voted in favour through a secret ballot, while two votes were declared invalid.

Nchemba, an economist and seasoned politician from the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party, previously served as minister for finance. He succeeds Kassim Majaliwa, who had held the position for a decade.
Nchemba, 50, represents the Iramba West constituency in parliament. The appointment makes him the 12th prime minister since Tanzania's independence in 1961.
In his acceptance speech, Nchemba pledged to prioritise the welfare of Tanzanians and work diligently to advance national development goals.
He was officially sworn in later in the day by Samia at the Chamwino State House on the outskirts of Dodoma.
